Lei Nāhonoapiʻilani – Nā Mele Hou
Proceeds benefit Nā Leo Kālele – West Maui’s Hawaiian Immersion Program
From the liner notes:
ʻĀina is more than “land.” It includes people and the ecosystem in which we all play a role. Aloha ʻāina, then, is the expression of connection, empathy and compassion shared in places and people. Aloha ʻāina is the attitude that informs our role as a part of the ʻāina.
One role of the haku mele, the composer of words and intentions, is to document ʻāina – the experiences of places and people – and weave it into the collective understanding established through generations of mele. As we sing these mele they become acts of aloha ʻāina, reminders of our role in ʻāina.
As a companion project to the 2019 album of “traditional” mele, find here 15 newly composed mele, expressions of aloha ʻāina, for the storied places, people and work of West Maui. These recordings serve to memorialize and strengthen the community commitment to aloha ʻāina, documenting and adding contemporary stories in an ever-growing lei of aloha ʻāina consciousness.
